Carola Erika Lorea born in Italy is a scholar of Bengali spiritual songs, popular religious culture and folklore. She achieved her PhD in 2015 from the Department of Asian and African Languages and Civilizations at Institute of Oriental Studies in La Sapienza University of Rome. Her PhD thesis was on "Learning to swim in the river of desire: the songs of Bhaba Pagla in their performative context". In her research work, she explained the creations of Bengali austere music icon Bhaba Pagla the history and style of his songs and performances, evolution of the performances and socio-cultural and religious interpretation of the lyrics of his songs. The first part of Carola's PhD research Folklore, Religion and the Songs of a Bengali Madman: A journey between performance and the Politics of Cultural Representation has been published from globally famous publishing house Brill. There is extended history behind Calola's engagement in Bengal Studies and research education. In 2005, she did her BA Degree on the literary works of Sukumar Roy during 2005-2008 from La Sapienza University of Rome Oriental Languages and Cultures. Further, she got Diploma degree on Bangla language, Sanskrit Grammar, Modern Bengali Literature, Comparative Indian Literature and political thought of India from Jadavpur University. She also did an academic course on Bangla Language and Modern Bangla Literature from Biswbharati University. Afterwards, she completed her MA Degree on developing Italian-Bangla Dictionary during 2008-2010 from the Department of Oriental Languages and Cultures in La Sapienza University of Rome. Moreover, she translated 'Banalata Sen' by Jibanananda Das; 'Abol Tabol' and 'Ha Ja Ba Ra La' by Sukumar Roy; and the novel 'Kangal Malsat' by Nabarun Batyacharya from Bangla to Italian. Except 'Abol Tabol' and 'Ha Ja Ba Ra La', her other translation works have been published by reputed publishers of Kolkata and Italy. This interview is reflects Carola Erika Lora's learning of Bangla Language and her folk culture oriented researches on Bengali music and literature.
