The end of the 18th till the beginning of the 20th centuries are marked in the history of Bengali thought by the emergence of processes of reinterpreting the national spiritual heritage, prompted by active interaction primarily with Western culture, values, and institutions. An important component of this process was the formation of certain perceptions of the Other, through dialogue with whom it became possible to achieve a more sensitive understanding of the Oneself and One's own identity. As a result, the foundations of national, cultural, and spiritual identities were revealed, which was particularly important in the context of the rise and development of the Indian national liberation movement at that time. This article attempts to identify some peculiarities of the formation, reflection, and main features of the image of the Other in the artistic dimension of the novel Pather dabi by the renowned Bengali writer Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay, in which it, although not expressed explicitly, plays a key role in the development of the narrative, setting the direction for the ideological searches of the main characters and updating the problem of their self-determination in a difficult political, social and cultural situation.
