Abstract

Japanese scholar Masayuki Onishi has conducted extensive multidimensional research on the Bengali language, literature, Baul music, as well as various forms of Bengali folk music, films, and paintings. His journey with Bengali language began in 1975 at ILCAA, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. He has delved into the literary works of prominent figures such as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Michael Madhusudan Dutta, Rabindranath Tagore, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, Jibananda Dash, Mahasweta Devi, and Samaresh Basu, translating some of them intro Japanese. Furthermore, he has extensively analyzed and translated Lalon songs. He has collected also various Baul songs, Bhaowaia, Tukkha, Bhadu, Tushu, Jhumur among others. Additionally, he has engaged with the cinematic works of Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. Presently, Masayuki Onishi is in the process of crafting a Bengali Grammar book in both Japanese and English. This interview provides insight into his profound dedication to Bengali language and literature, shedding light on the Japanese interest in Bengali literature, arts and culture.
