Abstract

The article attempts to briefly characterize the main challenges and methods of their resolution undertaken by the author while translating the novel Aranyak (1939) by the renowned Bengali classic Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (1894–1950) into Russian. Reflecting the personal experiences of the writer and serving as a kind of “book of life” of the forest and its inhabitants, the novel is entirely devoted to the Forest — perhaps the most important and profound image in the narrative, revealing itself in various aspects: as the primary locus where the action unfolds, as an active multi-faceted character that is often personified and appears before the
reader in different guises, and finally as a necessary Other, engaging in dialogue with whom allows the main character, Satyacharan, to gain a deeper understanding of himself. These aspects are extensively presented within the text at semantic, lexical, and syntactic levels. One of the main challenges in translation was selecting equivalent lexical units and organizing them into a syntactic structure similar to that of the original in order to preserve the richness of the forest imagery. Additionally, the article briefly addresses several specific translation difficulties and the strategies employed to resolve them.
