Abstract

The literary works of Rabindranath Tagore are highly adored among Chinese people. The Chinese people had been interested to Tagore's literature before Rabindranath was awarded Nobel Prize in 1913. In fact, a few weeks before Tagore's Nobel attainment, Chinese modern periodicals printed review on Tagore. During 1913-1924, the first stage of Rabindra study in China, Rabindranath was interpreted as a philosopher, preacher, educationalist, Indian Patriot-'A noble man who rekindled Indian civilization' and 'an ambassador of Indian civilization'. In addition, Tagore's poetry, short fiction etc were translated in Chinese language and published in Chinese periodicals and as books. Rabindranath's visit to China in 1924 vastly influenced Chinese literary and cultural fields. Rabindranath Tagore was very much delighted and touched at the warm reception of the Chinese people. Thus, at the end of his life, he wrote poem commemorating his China visit. Rabindra study in China slowed down during 1925-1980 for various reasons. However, on the occasion of hundredth anniversary of Tagore's birthday, 10 volumes of Tagore's work was translated from English and Russian into Chinese, and was published in 1961. But, Chinese people started studying Rabindranath widely from 1981 that still in 2017 has been going: in 2000, Chinese translation Tagore's works published in 24 volumes and in 2016, the government publishing house of China, People's Publishing House translated Tagore's works directly from Bangla and published in 33 volumes. This article describes different aspects of Rabindra Study in China and its influence in Chinese society, politics, literature and culture. It also discusses about the life of Rabindranath and his Shantiniketan. In addition, it analyses the causes and importance of establishing China Bhaban at Rabindrabharati University.
